Nutritional Therapy: Functional Medicine in Practice

Nutritional therapy for individuals

As a Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioner I provide private one-to-one consultations for people looking for support as they manage their health concerns. I use the holistic functional medicine approach to take an in-depth look at the nutritional and lifestyle factors that might be underlying your health challenges. This involves:

Dietary analysis and assessment

Exploration of family history and past and current health and lifestyle

Functional testing or recommendations to see your GP for testing

Identification of underlying biochemical imbalances

I can then recommend and discuss with you an appropriate course of action that might include dietary, supplement, fitness and lifestyle modifications as well as potential avenues to explore with your GP, consultant or other healthcare professionals. For complex cases, I can help you coordinate your portfolio of care.

Harnessing the power of nutritional and lifestyle changes is not always as simple as arming yourself with reams of information — as a health coach my aim is to support you as you implement new regimes and embed new habits.

Nutritional therapy: functional medicine as a tree

I visualise functional medicine using the example of a large, intricate tree:

If the leaves are not looking healthy, it’s important a look at the roots and the quality of the surrounding environment, the soil and its nutrients, the air, the wind, the sunshine, etc. We know that taking care of the roots and paying attention to the tree’s environment is a good way to nurture the whole plant!

For us as humans, if we take the functional medicine view, there might be things going on beneath the surface that we can’t see but which are affecting us in some part of our body, or even in various, seemingly unconnected, parts of our body. Our doctors are very good at taking care of our disparate parts and a nutritional therapist will never try to do your doctor’s job, but taking a functional medicine view of the body brings the holistic dimension that allows  us to recommend dietary, exercise and lifestyle recommendations that might best complement your doctor’s care.

Nutritional therapy consultations

The process starts with a free 20-minute chat by telephone. (Click on the scheduling button on this page to book yours.) This is to help us both to establish whether nutritional therapy  is the right fit for your current situation.

If you decide to go ahead, I will ask you to complete and return to me a health questionnaire prior to your initial appointment. I will discuss this with you in the consultation so that I can build a picture of your health so far and begin to identify any underlying biochemical imbalances. I can then suggest some initial nutritional and lifestyle recommendations that we discuss together and which I will send to you in writing after the consultation.

You will not be on your own, however, with these recommendations — I am there to coach you through the changes if and when issues come up for you along the way.

After the first consultation I will further analyse and research your case. Everyone is unique so it is important that I take into account your particular health history, any medications and supplements, family history, your dietary preferences, your lifestyle, etc.

In our next appointment we can assess how you got on with my initial recommendations and discuss our further course of action. This might include specific foods and, if appropriate, supplements, as well as helpful lifestyle options. It might also include discussion of any  functional tests or GP-ordered tests that could be useful for your case.

Clients book a course of three sessions so that they can get the most out of the process and benefit from text and online messaging support between sessions.

I specialise in brain and metabolic health. My clients tend to be people looking for support as they manage:

      • Brain and cognitive issues.
      • Weight
      • Pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes
      • Mood/energy swings
      • Fatigue
      • Low-carb/keto/intermittent fasting lifestyles
Nutritional therapy for families, infants and children

My experience running parenting and breastfeeding groups, as well as my journey with my own three children, has also brought me to specialise in the intricacies of baby and toddler diets, including weaning and reflux, as well as in nutrition for families with older children.
